Strong European Influences
As in other States from the Southern Region, the colonization process
in Santa Catarina started later than in Northeastern Region.
After the arrival of the Portuguese families from the Açores,
the Colonial Government made several efforts to bring there
immigrants from other European countries, such as Italy and
Germany. These colons set up and founded cities that kept their
traditions and habitudes (Pomerode, Blumenau, Joinville,
etc)
Performing Industries and Trade
Santa Catarina's economic power comes from its major industries,
specially textile. The ports - São Francisco do Sul,
Itajaí and Imbituba - are strong doorways to the State's
exports.
The Power of Agro-Business
Nevertheless, the agro-business activities - fruits, chicken,
ham - and responsible for a great part of the State's economic
power.
Nice Beaches and Tourism
To fullfil the
Santa Catarina economy, thanks to its nice seaside
and its beaches, the tourism has an important in the services
sector. Cities as Balneário Camboriú and Garopaba, besides
Florianópolis, the
Capital, welcome every year thousand of people during vacations.
