Ethnical Diversity
During the first centuries of Portuguese colonization of the Brazilian territory, these hardly reached the southern portion of this land. Indeed, this part of the territory was not included
in Portuguese possessions according to the Treaty of Tordesillas. Portugal's ambition, however, was to occupy territories spreading until the River de la Plata.
But this had hardly been the case. Later on, several colonization waves took place and occupied the lands of the newly created Capitany of São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul.
Those lands - before colonization - were inhabited by Tupi-Guarani Indians:
- the tropeiros
- African slaves
- Azorian colons
- Italian and German immigrants
