Preservation of Culture

The Nordeste preserves its social and cultural authenticity in spite of changings that happened these last 30 years. What are these specific nordestinos aspects?

Brazil started here

First region stepped on by Portuguese Conquistadores, at the beginning of XVIth century, the Nordeste - exactly at Porto Seguro, Bahia - keeps proudly this title, which became a slogan: Brazil started here (O Brasil começou aqui).

The Wood Colour of Burning Coal

It was from Nordeste that first goods went to Europe at the XVIth century (the famous pau-brasil). It was this wood colour of burning coal that gave the name to the new territory. The land of pau-brasil became Brasil.

Plenty of Water, Palms and Cliffs

Coming soon - The country's hinterland, that is the dominion of the sertão. It is a semi-desertic region, covered by thorny shrubs - the famous caatinga nordestina (caatinga: rare vegetation, from the Tupi) - and often under the influence of endemic dryness (sêca).

Luar do sertão

Moon shine of the sertão - Land of desolation and mysticism, the sertão is an important element of the Brazilian soul: the luar do sertão, the asa branca, the mulher rendeira (lacemaker woman), the carrancas, the forró, the litterature of cordel, the violeiros, the frevo and the maracatu are some of the cultural aspects that make sertão well known outside its boundaries.
