First Towns
The first settlements of the region toke place towards the south, at
São Vicente, which
village was founded in 1532. Thus,
São Vicente was the first town founded in Brazil.
The Portuguese discover Brazil
From the beginning
São Paulo has taken an actively part in the colonization of the territory by the
Portuguese conquerors commanded by
Pedro Álvares Cabral and his armada, in the XVIth century.
The Caiçaras
Later, the region's seaside of
São Sebastião was settled by fishermen (indians as well as Portuguese's descendants) who lived in rustic
conditions, known as the
caiçaras.
