Abstract - One of the most exuberants productions of local arts, the brazilian baroque can be admired all over the country.

However, the higjlights points can be found at the Cidades Históricas (the Historical Cities) of Ouro Preto (MG, Salvador (BA), Olinda (PE) and some other religious buildings of Rio de Janeiro, specially the Mosteiro de São Bento.

The wealth of brazilian baroque

Major artistic expression of the colonial period, the baroque art, in Brazil, has admirably imposed itself during the XVIIIth century, going on, however, till the end of the first decade of the XIXth century. A trip through Brazilian baroque will carry us to Bahia, Pernambuco, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro.

The gold rush and the baroque

The greatest baroque treasuries stay certainly in the Minas Gerais State.

The richness of its gold mines and precious gems (mainly diamond, atDiamantina, a city stated Humanity Cultural Patrimony by UNESCO have strongly counted to the growing of this art, because of local landlords orders for the construction of their riches manor houses, churches and other public and private buildings.

Art and religiousness

The Brazilian baroque expresses strong and vigorously all of people's religiosity. In our country, this artistic movement is closely tied to the christian faith. That's why it is founded in so many churches and explains its growing number of statuettes of saints that embellish the famous oratórios that were founded in olden times at one's houses.
